Microsoft could be on the verge of purchasing Fallout: New Vegas, Pillars of Eternity and South Park: The Stick of Truth developer, Obsidian Entertainment, according to recent reports.
A Microsoft spokesperson said the company does not comment on speculation, while Obsidian at least took a lighter approach to the news, stating: “Unfortunately, we don’t comment on rumours or speculation other than to say that the Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac still holds up.”
If the deal goes through, it would be the fifth studio this year Microsoft have purchased, following the acquisitions of Ninja Theory (Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice) Playground Games (Forza Horizon series) Undead Labs (State of Decay 2) and Compulsion (We Happy Few). A Kotaku source close to Microsoft is reporting that the company is looking to reinvigorate its PC development, and that Obsidian would be a “perfect fit” for such a task. The four playable classes – Siren, Commando, Gunzerker and Assassin – each have unique combat styles and updated skills that make use of VR functionality and there are new features planned, including Bad Ass Mega Fun Time, which allows you to slow down time in order to line up the perfect headshot. The menus have been updated to accommodate the use of motion controllers and a headset, providing a "new and intuitive way" to manage your inventory.
There are two movement styles to choose from, the classic system you'll no doubt be familiar with, or pointed teleportation which has became popular in other VR titles. For the first time in the series, players will be able to drive around in first-person perspective, steering with the joystick and aiming weapons with their headset. Borderlands 2 VR launches 14 December and those who pre-order will receive a dynamic PlayStation theme featuring the game's four vault hunters.
