A number of sources close to Eurogamer are saying Nintendo’s next console, the Switch, will support GameCube games via its Virtual Console service. GameCube Virtual Console support is apparently being handled by the team behind the recently released NES Classic Edition, Nintendo European Research and Development, or NERD.
According to Eurogamer, Nintendo are also looking into Switch support for the Wii U’s GameCube controller adaptor, although they say the company are uncertain whether they will go ahead with this plan. All this remains unconfirmed while Nintendo stay silent on the matter, but we’re getting closer to that January reveal event where we should know for certain whether the Switch will indeed feature GameCube Virtual Console support ahead of the console’s release in March 2017. You can read the Eurogamer article in its entirety, here. Would like to see GameCube games on the Nintendo Switch, and if so, which ones? Let us know in the comments or the forums. The free-to-play, third-person shooter/MOBA hybrid will be moving into open beta tomorrow, with six free characters on a weekly rotation to play across three maps. James Phinney, VP of Product Development at Motiga Inc. had this to say:
“With Gigantic, we are trying to create an entirely new competitive experience. Throughout development, Gigantic has gotten attention for its unique art style, whimsical setting and fast-paced gameplay, but our goal has always been something more. We've sought to build a game full of intense moments and meaningful strategic choices, where there are many paths to victory and it’s always possible to come back and win. Open Beta and participation in the Xbox Game Preview program is an exciting new phase for the project. We’re really looking forward to partnering with players to finish up Gigantic.” Were you lucky enough to play during the closed beta? Looking forward to trying Gigantic for the first time? Cold Iron were originally established back in November of last year, but officially debuted to the public today. Cold Iron is run by a team of industry veterans, whose previous works include titles such as “Neverwinter, Star Trek Online, Bioshock Infinite, Metroid Prime 3, DOOM, Atlas Reactor, Batman Arkham Origins: Blackgate and the Borderlands franchise.” Studio Founder and CEO, Craig Zinkievich, had a few words to say about the studio going public: “We couldn’t be more excited to finally introduce the world to Cold Iron. We decided to start this studio last year with exactly one goal in mind: to create compelling games that we wanted to play absolutely all the time,” he said. “To do that, we put together a pitch, built a great prototype, got fully-funded, and are now building an unstoppable team. We’re working hard on a AAA online action game that is literally out of this world, and we cannot wait to share it with you.” You can read a bit more about the three founding members of the Cold Iron team below:
“Craig Zinkievich (Founder/CEO) has over 13 years of experience designing and developing award-winning MMO games. He most recently served as Chief Operating Officer at Cryptic Studios, one of the leading developers of massively multiplayer online role-playing games. Prior to leading the studio as COO, he was a leader for three of the studios’ most financially successful and critically acclaimed titles. He was Lead Producer on the popular classic, City of Heroes and Executive Producer/Game Director on the iconic sci-fi MMO, Star Trek Online, and the Dungeons and Dragons MMORPG, Neverwinter.” “Shannon Posniewski (Founder/CTO) is a veteran game developer and designer with over 25 years of professional programming experience. At Cryptic Studios, he held several roles, including Principal Programmer, Director of Game Programming, and Game Director. Shannon was involved in every title the studio produced, including City of Heroes/Villains, Champions Online, Star Trek Online, and Neverwinter.” “Matt Highison (Founder/Creative Director) has served as Lead Artist for several successful MMO games. Most recently, he was the Art Director for Neverwinter, the D&D MMORPG set along the iconic Sword Coast of the Forgotten Realms. He has also served as the Senior Lead Character Artist at Cryptic Studios, where he designed in-game character models and uniforms for Star Trek Online and Champions Online.” No time frame was given for when Cold Iron are planning to release their game, or whether it was privately funded or they have the backing of a big publisher, but you can speculate all that and more with us over in the forums or in the comments below. The highly anticipated player housing feature will be coming to the game early next year, ZeniMax and Bethesda have confirmed. Houses can be purchased unfurnished for gold or Crowns, while fully furnished homes are only available via the game’s Crown Store. ZeniMax confirmed that in the future there will be Crown Store exclusive properties, “including a luxurious island retreat.” Before buying a property in a new area, players must first pass a few quests given to them by the inhabitants of the area to see if they are worthy. There won't be any houses available to purchase in areas which come as part of any DLC expansions, but players can own multiple homes across Tamriel.
Races aren’t tied to certain designs, so a Nord can own a Khajiit style home, for example, but Imperial style properties will only be available to those who own the Imperial Edition of the game. Other features of the Homestead update include:
Homestead is out sometime in February on Xbox One and PlayStation 4, while PC and Mac users will be able to try it out a little earlier by joining the ESO Public Test Server this January. It’s a brand-new month, so that means it’s time for the latest content drop for Gears of War 4, including two maps and some tweaks to the multiplayer.
Speyer “Evacuated long ago, this lonely district of Speyer is a still image of pre-Locust War life. The battle for the sanctuary is a close quarters affair, but teams looking to control the sprawling academy will need to do so together. Speyer’s opulent interiors and quaint plazas are best suited to longer range engagements.” Glory
“A monument of military might, this COG battery was used only against the most strategic targets to maintain its secrecy. The defensibility of this fortress can be used to your advantage if captured, which includes a powerful mounted turret that can suppress the courtyard below.” Arriving alongside the maps are a couple of updates to help improve the game’s multiplayer experience (which you can see below) as well as bonus credits and XP for season pass holders who make use of the new content during their week of early access.
The game will also be featured as part of the Xbox Store Holiday Sales, with a 33% discount for anyone who makes a purchase before 28 December. Alongside confirmation of the PlayStation and Xbox release dates was news that a Wii U version will not be making the cut, with developer ConcernedApe and publisher Chucklefish Games instead focussing on Nintendo’s next console, the Switch. “Looking at Wii U and the current gaming landscape, we made the difficult choice to shift our development efforts to creating a version for Nintendo Switch,” read a statement on the game’s official site, “I am really looking forward to the Switch, and I believe that the Switch’s unique capabilities could create some exciting opportunities for Stardew Valley.” Will you be getting away from the hustle and bustle of city living for a slice of the good life this December?
