Team 17 have announced they’ll be helping to bring Studio Koba’s Narita Boy to PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch sometime this spring.

Featuring pixel-art visuals inspired by a neon 80s aesthetic, Narita Boy is described as a narrative-driven “game inside a game” that tasks players with trying to save an “electronic synthwave world” from rogue code. The game is said to take inspiration from a number of varying sources, including games like Castlevania and films and TV shows such as Ready Player One and He-Man.
Once inside the Digital Kingdom, players will take on puzzles and powerful bosses while wielding the Techno-Sword; a legendary blade that’s also capable of transforming into a shotgun or a “devastating laser beam.”

Here’s a list of some of the game’s notable features:

  • Go back to the future: A homage to the eighties with a new spin on classic gameplay styles, Narita Boy takes players back in time for a blast from the past.
  • You have the power!: The Techno-Sword can be used alongside mysterious magic so that players can carve and blast their way through enemies great and small.
  • Might as well jump: The classic 2D platformer will see players explore imaginative landscapes and navigate a plethora of pixel art environments.
  • Pixel-perfect story: Encounter weird and wonderful digitised characters on a journey to discover the secrets of the Digital Kingdom and its elusive creator.
  • Pump up the jam: Inspired by the glory days of analogue synthesizers, the pumping soundtrack turns back the clock for this techno-journey.

While there’s no solid release date yet, the game is said to be launching sometime this spring. It’ll be available on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC. The game will also be available via Xbox Game Pass (PC and console) on the day of release.
