Deck13 have released a new trailer that details some of the meaty combat mechanics players will experience in their hardcore action RPG, The Surge. In the six-minute long video, members of The Surge’s development team discuss the game’s story, combat mechanics, and the “rich, secret-filled” near future setting.

Thanks to the exo-suit that’s been grafted onto protagonist Warren’s body, and the game’s limb-based targeting system, players are able to deal massive amounts of damage to an enemy’s weak spot, sometimes even removing an appendage altogether. But as Deck13 point out, the same principles are applied to the player, so positioning becomes very important – even the slightest misstep could end in death.

To ensure that Warren didn’t feel like an “overpowered superhero,” Deck13 kitted out the stuntman who provided the motion capture for the game’s protagonist with 20kg of added weight, which gave his movements a realistic, weighty feel to them.
