Mirror's Edge Catalyst teased the gaming community at large over the weekend with a Closed Beta offering its opening levels and a chance to explore the city. We had a look around and James has captured our thoughts on what is shaping up to be one of EA's biggest releases this year.

We join Faith in this series reboot - It's not a sequel - two years into a prison stint that's done nothing to dampen her spirits, she's just as rebellious and angry at the world as ever. Not only that, but now there are new young upstarts running around.

In a nutshell, the game feels similar to the original. DICE has captured the fluid movement which made it so compelling, though not having some of Faith's most familiar movements from the very start (potentially even more so in the final game) could prove awkward for some.

The difficulty definitely seems to have been smoothed out for Catalyst, with the new, souped-up runner's vision showing you a suggested route as well as highlighting traversable objects in the series' signature red.

Combat takes more of a back seat this time around as well, with guns falling to the ground uselessly rather than turning Faith into an awkward would-be Call of Duty star. One potential issue with this could be that the missions are less varied, since different types of combat can introduce different challenges, but it's just as much of a challenge to get away from trouble without firing a shot.
