There's often times when AAA titles begin to feel a bit stale, and as a gamer you yearn for something a bit different, a more simple and chilled out experience; and it's usually at those times that you pick up something you probably wouldn't have considered before. If that sounds familiar to you, then I have good news - not only is Entwined (at the time of writing) free for PS+ subscribers, but it's bloody brilliant.

Entwined is a short but sweet offering from new Sony studio Pixelopus, in which you use the two analogue sticks on the Dualshock 4 to independently control two small creatures – a blue bird and an orange fish. The aim is simple - collect their respective coloured gems and glide through obstacles where you have to move each creature through sections of their matching colour. Missing the coloured sections will result in the loss of gems - which you need to finally bring the two friends together to end the level, at which point something rather marvelous happens.

Combining a beautiful, simplistic art style and easy to grasp (although sometimes frustrating) gameplay, Entwined is reminiscent of much loved classics like Fl0w and Flower. It manages to portray a story of friendship and cooperation without ever using words or giving the player an actual story, and is done so wonderfully you're left baffled as to why more people haven't heard if it (indeed, I hadn't until it came up on PS+, and I can't help but think that's a real shame).

Held back only by its lack of longevity - it only has nine levels, although there is a separate 'challenge' mode to keep it going a bit longer - Entwined is a must for anyone who currently holds a PS+ subscription. And you know what? Even if you don't, or you're reading this later, buy it anyway. You won't regret it, and it would be great to see what else these guys develop in the future.

• Later levels can be quite frustrating
