Nintendo Switch launch sales reach 80,000 in the UK

The Switch has only been available for a few days, but Nintendo’s latest effort is already faring noticeably better than its predecessor, the Wii U.

According to gamesindustry.biz, retailers reportedly shifted 80,000 units in the UK during the launch weekend, eclipsing the 40,000 the Wii U managed when it debuted back in 2012. While it’s off to a much healthier start, Switch sales were not as strong as the Wii and 3DS at launch, which sold 105,000 and 113,000 units respectively.

Unsurprisingly, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has also been doing rather well, debuting at number two in the UK top 10.
 
It’s safe to say the largest portion of sales went to the Switch version of Breath of the Wild, but there were apparently quite a few who picked up the Wii U edition, including Rob.
 
It’s the third best launch for a Zelda game in the franchise’s history (only Wind Waker and Twilight Princess fared better) and is the highest rated game in nine years, according to Metacritic.
