Double Fine Productions' 3D rogue-like, RAD, is up for grabs on Steam in this week's giveaway.

Set in a post-post-apocalyptic world, RAD channels Stranger Things and has players take control of 80s kids battling monsters in neon landscapes. In addition to carrying a melee weapon, the kids can acquire grotesque genetic mutations that grant them new powers.

In typical rogue-like fashion,  RAD is pretty tough to beat and features permadeath. There are, however, persistent upgrades to help make each run feel worthwhile and keep players progressing.

Up for taking a radical trip back in time? Enter via Gleam below for a chance to win a RAD Steam key. The game is also available to purchase for £15.99 on Steam.

Good luck!

The Elder Scrolls Online: Blackwood release date revealed, coming this summer

27/1/2021

Bethesda and ZeniMax have announced the latest expansion coming to MMORPG The Elder Scrolls Online.

by Liam Andrews

@pass_controller

Set 800 years before the events of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, the paid Blackwood expansion introduces over 30 hours of main storyline, “tons of sidequests,” and, in an ESO first, also adds AI companions that will accompany players as they explore Tamriel. The expansion will take players to locations such as the Imperial City of Leyawiin and the murky bogs of Shadowfen, while also stopping by the titular Blackwood region
The expansion arrives as part of ESO’s Gates of Oblivion year-long adventure, a sprawling event that will see new events periodically added to the game throughout the year.

The first of these, the Flames of Ambition DLC, arrives in March and adds new dungeons that will build up to the events of the main Blackwood expansion.

More dungeons will be released sometime after the Blackwood expansion as well as an end-of-story DLC that will include “new adventures and areas.”

The Elder Scrolls Online: Blackwood is out 1 June on PC, Mac and Stadia, then arrives on Xbox One and PS4 8 June.

What do you think of ESO’s latest expansion? Let us know below.

Haven PS4 and Nintendo Switch versions coming next month

26/1/2021

Haven

The Game Bakers (Furi) have revealed a release date for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 editions of Haven, an adventure game about “love, freedom and rebellion.”

by Liam Andrews
Picture

@pass_controller

Originally scheduled for a December release alongside the Xbox One and PC editions, the Switch and PS4 versions were delayed to early 2021 following disruptions caused by the pandemic. A member of the development team took to the game’s Steam page late last year to confirm that the studio - which is only made up of 14 people - ended up prioritising the next-gen versions of the game.
The commitment to making sure Haven was available day one on Xbox Game Pass (both on console and PC) also had to be treated as a “high priority,” according to The Game Bakers.

In Haven, players control Yu and Kay, two runaway lovers that have escaped their home world and settled on a strange new planet. Players can explore their surroundings by gliding over the landscape as they search for resources and battle dangerous fauna in real-time strategic combat. Though it’s designed for solo play first and foremost, Haven also supports local co-op for two players.

Haven is out 4 February on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. It’s currently available on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

Arcade shooter Redout: Space Assault out now for PC and consoles

22/1/2021

Redout-Space-Assault

34BigThings’ Redout: Space Assault, an arcade space shooter, launches today on Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch and PC.

by Liam Andrews
Picture

@pass_controller

A prequel to Redout (2016), a high-speed racing game inspired by the likes of Wipeout and F-Zero, Redout: Space Assault sees players leaving futuristic race tracks behind for space battles above Mars. The game is said to build upon the series’ “lightning-fast action” and “high-skill gameplay,” and features a “deep” single player career mode composed of unique missions.
It looks like Space Assault also takes a hefty dose of inspiration from a past classic, with the arcade-style gameplay and barrel rolls shown off in the trailer being very reminiscent of the early Star Fox games.

Rather than an Arwing, however, players will be battling it out in a fully customisable “Super Orbital Recon Fighter,” utilising a wide variety of weapon upgrades to “outmanoeuvre, overpower and outclass” their opponents in dogfights.

Redout: Space Assault is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC with an RRP of £8.99/$9.99/€9.99.

Let us know your thoughts on the series’ new direction below or in the forums.

New Pokémon Snap gets spring release date

14/1/2021

New-Pokemon-Snap

Nintendo have shared more details on New Pokémon Snap, including a late April release date, in an all-new trailer.

by Liam Andrews
Picture

@pass_controller

Said to be inspired by the original Pokémon Snap on Nintendo 64, New Pokémon Snap is an on-rails adventure in which players are tasked with photographing Pokémon in their natural habitats. Photos are then rated by a score system which takes into account how large the creatures appear, how they’re framed and whether or not they’re facing the camera. The best photos can then be used to fill out the Pokédex.
Players will be able to grab the attention of wild Pokémon by chucking out a fluffruit, which can also be used to try and draw the Pocket Monsters into various situations.

New Pokémon Snap is set in a new area known as the Lental Region, which appears to be made up of a series of islands and archipelagos. Lental is also home to the rare Illumina phenomenon which causes certain plants and Pokémon to glow, and it’s up to you to find out what causes it.

More than 200 Pokémon will be available to photograph and can be spotted exhibiting a variety of behaviours. Some will move in groups or individually, and they can also be caught playing together or battling each other.

New Pokémon Snap is out 30 April exclusively on Nintendo Switch and has an RRP of £49.99 / $59.99.

New Star Wars game in development at Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games

13/1/2021

Ubisoft-Star-Wars

Ubisoft and Lucasfilm Games are teaming up to bring players an all-new Star Wars game, it’s been revealed.

by Liam Andrews
Picture

@pass_controller

There’s little information to pore over just yet, with Ubisoft only confirming that it’ll be a story-driven, open-world title. Development duties are being handled by Ubisoft Massive, the studio behind The Division and The Division 2. It’ll also utilise the same Snowdrop engine as those two games.
While there are no details on the geographical setting or time period just yet, it does sound like Ubisoft’s Star Wars game will feature a new set of characters with their own unique story.

According to Creative Director Julian Gerighty, it’ll be “a unique game in the saga with a captivating story and set of characters that players can relate to and connect with.” Gerighty continued, “We want to take what is familiar and resonant about Star Wars and tell the stories of new characters who have their own motivations and stakes.” The full interview is available here.

Today’s reveal isn’t the only big piece of news coming out of the recently revived Lucasfilm Games, with yesterday bringing about confirmation that Bethesda and Machine Games (Wolfenstein 2) are making a new Indiana Jones game.

No release date or target platforms have been announced for either game yet, but feel free to speculate over in the forums or in the comments below.

Super Mario 3D World Switch trailer debuts new Bowser’s Fury gameplay

12/1/2021

Super-Mario-3D-World-Bowser's-Fury

Nintendo have released a new trailer showing off Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury gameplay, giving players their first look at the new expansion in action.

by Liam Andrews
Picture

@pass_controller

Bowser’s Fury is an all-new expansion that comes bundled with Super Mario 3D World on Nintendo Switch. In the new adventure, players are accompanied by Bowser Jr., who wields a special paint brush that can be used to combat enemies and unlock hidden abilities for Mario.
As showcased in the trailer, it looks like Bowser has been covered in some sort of goo reminiscent of that which plagued Isle Delfino in Super Mario Sunshine. It’s made him very big and very angry, so it’s up to Mario and Jr. to stop/save him.

Right at the end of the footage we also get a quick glimpse of a supersized Cat Mario preparing to face off against a supersized Bowser.

Away from the new expansion, the Switch version of Super Mario 3D World will feature a few gameplay enhancements over the 2013 Wii U original. All characters boast faster movement speeds, increased climbing height with the Super Bell ability activated, plus there’s now online multiplayer and gyro control support.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury is out 12 February exclusively on Nintendo Switch.

What do you think of the new expansion? Let us know below or in the forums.
