A new Nintendo Direct has revealed the next Pokémon title for eager fans to enjoy will be Pokkén Tournament DX (or Deluxe) on the Nintendo Switch on 22 September.

The game is a re-release of the Wii U title Pokkén Tournament, a fighting game which pits Pokémon against each other in a style similar to Tekken - rather than the turn-based battle system familiar to players of the mainline games.

This version includes five new characters - Darkral, Scizor, Empoleon, Croagunk and Decidueye, fresh from Pokémon Sun and Moon - to add to the original roster of 16 playable Pokémon.

Also announced in the eight-minute Direct (which you can watch in full below), were new, souped-up versions of the latest games in the main series, called Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, due to release on 17 November.

The games retain the Hawaii-inspired Alola setting from Sun and Moon, but boast an alternate story mode and Pokémon not previously seen in the game. It’s likely these will be ‘mon left out of Sun and Moon’s relatively modest roster of 300+, rather than new monsters, since the total number out there is already over 700.

Finally, there was a nostalgic surprise in store from developers Gamefreak, in the form of virtual console releases for Pokémon Silver and Gold, both of which debuted in the Gameboy Color era back in 1999. The games will be available on the Virtual Console on the 3DS “family” of devices on 22 September.
Expect more from Nintendo’s Treehouse at E3 next week, but in the meantime, what do you think of the news? Will you be tempted to buy another Deluxe version after Mario Kart 8? Is a new ‘alternate’ story in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon enough to get you excited? Let us know in the comments, and geek out to the max in the Forums.
