One of the biggest changes sees a much-requested feature finally make its way to PlayStation 4; external HDD support. This will allow people to store games and apps on any USB 3.0 HDD, with drives up to 8TB supported. Saved content can be accessed through the settings menu, and will also appear in the Content Launcher on the home screen.
Other features included in the 4.50 update:

  • Custom Wallpapers: Screenshots can now be used as wallpapers on the home screen and can be customised using Photo Mode in Sharefactory. To make sure text and icons on the home screen stay visible, it will be possible to “drop-shadows on text” and “dim the Function Area.”
  • Quick Menu Refresh: The Quick Menu will take up less of the gameplay screen, and allows players to invite friends and create and join parties via the Online Friends section, without having to open up the separate Party app.
  • Simplified Notification List: The Notification List has been simplified from multiple tabs to one single list, and allows quick access to settings where players can customise which notifications appear on screen.
  • Post on PlayStation Network Activity Feeds: Post gifs, screenshots and text directly to the Activity Feed and tag games or other users in order to make sure your post isn’t missed. Content from other users uploaded to PSN will appear on Live from PlayStation as a Public Activity.
  • 3D Blu-rays on PlayStation VR: Those who own a PSVR will now be able to watch movies in stereoscopic 3D directly on their headset.
More of 4.50 features will be revealed later on, Sony confirmed, including when the update launches for everyone else.
