It's a controversial addition to a full price title with no multiplayer features, but over on the official forums, Monolith Productions have assured fans that the microtransactions are completely optional and everything that can purchased in the market can be acquired naturally through gameplay.
A recent live stream showed how you'll be able to forge and customise your army using the market.
There are two currencies in Shadow of War, Mirian and Gold, which can be used to buy Loot Chests, War Chests, XP Boosters and Bundles. Loot Chests contain gear (weapons and armour) of varying rarity. Equipping and upgrading this gear enhances Talion's abilities. Those chests will also contain XP Boosters to help players level up faster.

War Chests contain Orc followers and Training Orders, which are used to level up and customise followers.

Bundles package together Loot Chests, War Chests and XP Boosters at a discount.

Mirian is earned by defeating Treasure Orcs, destroying gear, destroying Orc followers (which awards gear that can then be further broken down into Mirian) and finding stashes throughout the game.

Gold can purchased with real world money. Small amounts are also earned for reaching specific milestones and completing community challenges. Gold is used to purchase a higher level of the same chests and boosts.

How do you feel about the inclusion of microtransactions? Would you consider buying Gold to fast forward some of the grind? Let us know below or in the forums.

They should be kept for the mindless mobile game playing crowd. No business being in a proper game. Cast it into the fire!
