If you feel a little uneasy when it comes to public voting, fear not, this year's Golden Joystick Awards contained no nasty surprises, just a handful of worthy winners. Dark Souls 3, Overwatch and Pokemon Go were a few of the standout titles to receive praise.
2015's Ultimate Game of the Year, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, was once again honoured as its Blood and Wine DLC took the awards for Best Storytelling and Best Visual Design. Doug Cockle won Best Gaming Performance for his work as Geralt of Rivia, and developers CD Projekt Red won Studio of the Year.
The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Eiji Aonuma, the man behind the much loved The Legend of Zelda series. Despite winning such a prestigious award, Aonuma left his ego at the door, stating: “I am glad, honoured and really humbled to be awarded the Golden Joysticks 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award. I say I’m humbled because when I heard about this award, I had to ask myself… “am I qualified to be accepting this myself as an individual, when the award belongs more to The Legend of Zelda series?” With this understanding I accept the award with pleasure on behalf of more that 1,000 creators, artists, engineers and composers who have worked on the series for more than 30 years.” In the individual console categories, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD won Nintendo Game of the Year, Uncharted 4: A Thief's End took PlayStation Game of the Year, and Rise of the Tomb Raider was Xbox Game of the Year. 2016 marks the 20 year anniversary of Tomb Raider. Its iconic star, Lara Croft, was inducted into the Golden Joystick Awards Hall Of Fame. The full list of winners can be found below.
