Battlefield V returns to its World War 2 roots in October

Last week Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 was presented to the world, but yesterday was all about Battlefield V's return to World War 2-era combat.

Members of the development team at DICE sat down with Trevor Noah to discuss the setting, weapons, vehicles, game modes and mechanics. The show ended with a big, all-out action trailer, which seems like the perfect place for us to start.
On to the reveal proper: we know that the single player War Stories mode, introduced in Battlefield 1, will feature, as will multiplayer Operations, now named Grand Operations. The former puts players into the boots of a single character, aiming to portray a more personal side of the war as they experience key moments from that character's own unique perspective, whilst the latter sees two teams face off against one another over the course of multiple maps and modes.

Not much was said about Combined Arms, except it's a four-player co-op mode with randomly generated missions.

Aside from the usual load of guns and tanks with which to decimate the enemy, you can also make a difference in a supporting role. The new Fortifications mechanic allows players to use the toolbox to implement defensive strategies, such as repairing buildings and setting up machine gun nests to push back attackers.

Another new addition to gameplay is The Company, your own collection of soldiers, weapons and vehicles. You'll earn customisation options through playing and the developers made a point of noting that there'll be no lootboxes.

Of course, you can expect DLC, but the Premium Pass has been scrapped and all future maps and modes will be made available to the entire player base at no additional cost. The first batch of fresh content is scheduled to drop in November and focuses on the fall of Europe.

If you'd like to watch the reveal in full, we've got you covered. Those uninterested in a lengthy countdown timer may want to skip ahead to the 55 minute mark.

Battlefield V releases 19 October, or three days earlier for those who pre-order the Deluxe Edition. The Play First Trial goes live on 11 October for any Xbox or PC players with a respective EA or Origin Access subscription.

In the meantime, EA and DICE are giving players the opportunity to snag some free DLC. For a limited time, you can download and keep Battlefield 1's In the Name of the Tsar and Battlefield 4's Final Stand. Head on over to the official site for more details.

Which game do you think had the better reveal,
Battlefield V or Black Ops 4? Let us know below or over in the forums.
